Winter in Maine has a charm all its own, and what better way to embrace the season than by experiencing the growing trend of igloo dining? Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion like Valentine’s Day, a birthday, or simply looking for a cozy, memorable evening, igloo dining offers a magical way to enjoy Maine’s culinary scene even in the coldest months. During a recent visit, we were lucky to book an igloo dining experience at the Portland Harbor Hotel, where we dined under gently falling snow in their garden patio.

What Is Igloo Dining?

Igloo dining has become a wintertime favorite across the U.S., especially in colder regions like Maine. Transparent, dome-shaped igloos allow diners to enjoy the beauty of winter without the chill. Inside, these igloos are outfitted with heaters, comfortable chairs, warm blankets, and even speakers for personalizing your atmosphere with music. Igloos are perfect for intimate dinners, small gatherings, or unique celebrations. With snow swirling outside, they create a cozy escape that still feels connected to the winter wonderland around you.

In Portland, igloo dining is offered at several locations, including the Portland Harbor Hotel’s Harborview Terrace restaurant and the Alto Terrace restaurant at the Cambria Hotel. These venues are situated in the heart of the Old Port, making them easily accessible and ideal for pairing a dining experience with other wintertime adventures.

The Igloo Dining Experience at the Portland Harbor Hotel

Located on the garden patio of the Portland Harbor Hotel, their igloos provide a warm, inviting escape from the winter chill. Each igloo is equipped with plush chairs, blankets, a heater, and a speaker system for custom music. Dining here feels intimate and luxurious, with the added charm of twinkling lights and snow-dusted surroundings.

The Harborview Terrace restaurant offers an excellent menu featuring locally inspired cuisine, perfect for savoring Maine’s flavors in this cozy setting. Reservations are recommended, especially during the busy winter months.

Igloo Dining at the Cambria Hotel

A short walk from the Portland Harbor Hotel, the Cambria Hotel’s Alto Terrace restaurant offers a similarly enchanting igloo dining experience. With two igloos available, the Cambria brings a unique twist to winter dining, providing warmth, privacy, and an unforgettable ambiance. Their menu features creative dishes and seasonal cocktails, making it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.

With seating for up to 6 adults, you can sip on customized cocktails, enjoy locally sourced entrees, or have fun ordering a ton of appetizers so you can sample all the tasty treats. Each “Fire + Ice” igloo comes with a space heater, blankets, a Bluetooth speaker, and all the ambiance you could want whether with your partner or a whole gang of friends.

Ice Bar at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, ME

While not an igloo, we couldn’t leave you hanging without another winter wonderland dining experience at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, ME. You’ll be treated to handcrafted drinks served along a specially cast ice bar with matching polar bears ice sculptures and lounge chairs cut to fit as frozen seating.

You will want to dress warm, but there are fur lined blankets everywhere to keep the night chill at bay. Cocktails, beer, and wine come in hot and cold versions and there is always some special event involving iconic ice luges or food fests like homemade New England clam chowder scheduled.

Staying at the Samoset Hotel grants you automatic entry into the ice bar. Otherwise, you’ll need to purchase $30 tickets. Just be a little careful with your timing. The Glacier Ice Bar at the Samoset in Rockport hosts DJs and live music, so tickets sell out quickly.

We should note, there have been igloos available in the past at the Samoset. These are on a first-come, first-serve basis during most events, but can be rented as part of the Ice Bar for bigger groups. They are designed as “warming stations” with a small table and 4 chairs more than dining experiences.
